In the opening video clip, comedian and “priest” Father Guido Sarducci lays out his plan for a “5-Minute University,” where students only study what they would normally remember 5 years after completing their studies. We laugh and appreciate Guido’s daring to tell the truth about all the time we waste studying “junk” that we’re just going to forget anyway, as soon as (hopefully) we pass the test. We contrast the 5-minute plan to the mandated
K-12 standards that real life education researcher Robert Marzano (who also can be funny but who is deadly serious about standards) admits would take from K-22 to cover. We look at the massive amount of information that inundates us. We examine a variety of ways that technology can help us sift through information and pick what we need to construct knowledge. Finally, we consider the ultimate goal of education, to achieve the wisdom of identifying one’s gifts and acquiring the skills to deliver those gifts to the places in our world where they are needed the most. With this approach, we may not get through K-12 in five minutes, but we will remember a lot more of what we learn!
